At Perdomo Roofing & Sheetmetal, LLC we don’t just offer complete roofing services, but so much more. Have you considered if your attic is properly insulated? Good insulation in your attic offers you the following benefits:

Reduced Energy Costs
With the costs of heating and cooling continuously rising, you want to make sure that your home is as energy efficient as possible. You could be losing a lot of heat from your home or spending too much on cooling costs due to lack of insulation. Proper insulation works by trapping pockets of air and creating a thermal barrier between the inside and outside temperatures of your home or business. This means temperatures will not go up or down as drastically with proper insulation. By reducing your energy costs you are also helping the environment and those around you.

Reduced Damage to Stored Goods
An improperly insulated attic can contribute to the damage of any possessions you might store there. Very hot temperatures can create a perfect environment for any number of molds and fungi to take over your attic. This can lead to rot damage to the structure of your home or business and result in large losses of sometimes irreplaceable items.

All insulation types are rated by their insulation value or “R” value. The higher the R-Value, the more the thermal value. Attic insulation is normally a high R value such as R-30 or R-38.

Types of Attic Insulation

Rolls or Batts
Rolls or batts of insulation go down quickly and can be a good choice for attics that are simply for insulation and ventilation reasons rather than storage. They can take longer to install than loose or blow-in insulation since they are normally stapled to the existing roof rafters or studs. For those with cathedral style ceilings, batts are a good option.

Foam Insulation
Foam insulation offers a high R Value per inch of insulation, making it a good choice for spaces with thinner boards and studs. Foam is denser and can add more R-Value per inch of insulation than traditional fiberglass. This type of insulation has seen a rise in popularity in recent years for its ability to give you the maximum insulation value for your space,

Loose or Blow-In Insulation
This can be made of various fibers such as fiberglass or even recycled paper. The insulation is blown into an attic crawlspace so that it is distributed evenly for maximum effectiveness. This type of insulation is very easy to install, taking only a few hours for most homes, meaning you don’t have to deal with your home being a construction site any longer than necessary.

Effects of Old Insulation
In older homes, the insulation may have begun to deteriorate. Over time, insulation can become flat or take on a “smashed down” look. When this happens, the original insulation value is drastically decreased. The only way to know how your insulation is looking in your older home is to inspect it. Since this can be not the most pleasant task, many people avoid this and continue losing heat or having to use their air conditioners on a higher setting than what would be necessary with a properly insulated attic space. Over the years this can add up to a lot of money lost.
